The rules and the mechanics of a poker game is not the only aspect one should consider when deciding to play a poker game. Player evaluation is as important, if not more, than the structure of the game itself as the other players who will also play the game factors more prominently particularly in formulating a sound strategy.
A table with nothing but good players relative to one's ability should be avoided as one cannot expect profitability and a high hourly rate in it. An ideal game would be that of a table with one or two bad players or five or six mediocre players.
Once you have determined that the skill levels of your opponents are suitable for your own skill level to profit decently, you will then use player evaluation to assess their mistakes and see how you can best take advantage of those mistakes.
Your player evaluation process should also look out for poker players who play loose as they are the most likely to commit common mistakes that are easy to spot and take advantage of. Playing too many hands is one such mistake of loose poker players. A good way to take advantage of it is by not playing as loosely as they do and encouraging such players to play even more hands.
Loose players also tend to call too much not only on the first round of betting, but on all rounds. When such mistakes are being made, be ready to take advantage by playing tight and conservative and avoiding the bluff especially if you have a solid hand. Bluffing has no value when playing against such players as they will call you no matter what.
Sometimes however, you'll be spotting through player evaluation the loose player's absolute opposite: the tight poker player. These types typically play too tight on the first round and on every round, unaware that the tighter they play, the more likely that they will be taken advantage of by you. Take advantage of tight plays by stealing antes with greater occurrence than your normal play and raising forces bets especially when you are alone in the round against a tight player.
Apart from loose and tight players, you should also use player evaluation to look for poker players who never bluff. Finding such players is a gift from above as you will have tremendous advantage against such players. Players who do not bluff are easy to read since you can very well assume that they have a good hand when they bet and a crappy hand if they do not.
Apart from evaluating game structure, player evaluation is one of the two most important aspects when deciding whether a game is worth playing. Evaluating whether the types of players in the game will be beneficial to you and your strategy is an important decision to achieve domination in the poker tables.
