If you are a poker fan, we would not believe you if you say that you don't know who Phil Hellmuth, Jr. is. As far as we know, and as far as the poker public in general knows, Phil Hellmuth, Jr. is one of the most, if not the most, famous professional poker players across the universe. This is not only because of the fact that he plays poker well. This is also not only because of the fact that he is an inductee into the Poker Hall of Fame. But most of all, it is because of the fact that he has already earned a total of eleven World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelets within his entire poker career. And poker fans who would say that they don't know who this guy is should also stop saying that they are poker fans. Phil Hellmuth, Jr. is definitely one famous guy in the world of professional poker.
Born in Madison, Wisconsin on July 16, 1964, Phil Hellmuth, Jr. was trying to complete a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison when he decided to drop out in order to play poker on a full-time basis. He is married to Katherine Sanborn, whom he encouraged to participate in a 2005 WSOP event but was unfortunately eliminated by female professional poker player Jennifer Tilly. The couple has two sons, namely, Nicholas and Phillip, and they reside in Palo Alto, California.
Phil Hellmuth, Jr. started to be recognized in the industry in 1988, and then, in 1989, he already won his very first WSOP bracelet. He was one of the contestants of the US$10,000 No Limit Hold'em World Championship game and emerged as the winner in heads up play against poker giant Johnny Chan. At that time, Phil Hellmuth, Jr. broke the record of Chan, who was the defending champion for two consecutive years. He was also awarded US$755,000.
In 1992, Phil Hellmuth, Jr. won the US$5,000 Limit Hold'em game of WSOP, his second bracelet and US$188,000. In 1993, he successfully won three bracelets, one of which was from a Limit Hold'em game and two were from No Limit Hold'em poker games. He was not very visible between 1994 and 1996, but he proved that such absence was not a hindrance to his success as a holder of WSOP bracelets.
In 1997, Phil Hellmuth, Jr. showed that he definitely knew how to play Pot Limit Hold'em games by winning his sixth bracelet and US$204,000. This bracelet was followed by another one in 2001, two more bracelets in 2003, another one in 2006, and the latest was won in 2007.
In the World Series of Poker alone, Phil Hellmuth, Jr. already has a total of US$5,604,386 prize winnings. He is also recognized as the seventh poker professional included on the All Time Money List of WSOP.
Phil Hellmuth, Jr. has also been known for being the Late Night Poker champion during the television game show's third season. He also defeated such poker players as Chris Ferguson, Antonio Esfandiari, Lyle Berman, Huck Seed, Paul Phillips, and Men Nguyen in the National Heads-Up Poker Championship event that was held in 2005.
