Texas hold'em has three variations with three distinct betting structures. These include limit, no limit, and pot limit hold'em. When we say we're going to play Texas hold'em, it generally means we're going to play the limit version unless otherwise specified. It's so named because the amount of poker bets and raises in limit hold'em are already pre-set.
Texas hold'em has four betting rounds in total. There's one pre-flop, one post-flop, one more after the turn and finally, there's one after the river. There are two fixed amounts for poker stakes in limit hold'em, each of which applies to the first two and last two betting rounds. These poker bets or stakes in limit hold'em are what's used to determine both the big and small blinds in a hand as well. This characteristic in the limit version allows players to know how much they can win or lose in one session.
Let's say the poker stakes in Texas hold'em is $3/$6. That means the small blind required to start off the game is $3.00 and the big blind that should be posted is $6.00. For players to stay on to see the flop, they should call the big blind. But if someone raises the stakes at this point, it's going to have to be in increments of $3.00. And for the game to go on to the flop, the remaining players should have put in an equal amount to the pot.
The $3.00 per bet and raise in a $3/$6 stake carries on after the flop. The pre-flop and post-flop betting rounds constitute half of the betting cycles. After that, poker bets and raises at the turn and river will have to be in increments of $6.00. Also, there's a cap on re-raises in limit hold'em which states that it's restricted to three raises only per betting round - that's one bet and three raises in one betting cycle, at most.
Poker bets in Texas hold'em are reflected in what's called table stakes. In limit hold'em, you'll notice that there are two predetermined amounts per game. The first amount is always half the value of the second amount in poker bets. These values control the betting rounds because they indicate what's required for the blinds as well as the increments for each betting cycle. The first amount in the poker stakes indicates the required small blind as well as the poker bets and raises at pre-flop and post-flop. While the second amount in the stakes refers to the obligatory big blind and bets at the turn and river.
