Coping with Poker Mistakes

Watching professional Poker players win millions of dollars in tourneys can make a new or average player wonder. How does he do it? Why is it does he is able to make the right decisions? What is the secret? If you are thinking along these lines, it is time you understand that there is no secret.

There is no secret Poker strategy to help you overcome and eliminate all possible errors from creeping in your game. And contrary to what some people believe, even the best players occasionally make mistakes. The reason they succeed is that they are able to cope and learn from those errors.

You can do the same, and the first thing that you must do is accept the fact that a lot of the mistakes comes from your own miscalculations. If you simply blame all your Poker errors on bad luck, then you will never improve. The same can be said for Poker players who always claim they lose because they were cheated.

Another common source is simple confusion. Very often, a player can get bewildered by the hand he is holding because he is used to playing another Poker variant. For instance, if you are used to playing Limit Holdem, switching to Omaha Hi Lo can be perplexing. The Poker strategy here, of course, is to make sure you memorize the rules, and until you have it down pat, never play for money.

Among new players, another error is that their actions often betray the hand they are holding. This is frequently seen among those who bluff too much, but can also be seen in other instances. For example if you are holding AK and have raised, do not make the mistake of checking if the flop does not turn out the way you like, and then raising if your opponent checks.

Doing so will give your hand away and your opponent will call you down. A lack of consistency will lead to heavy losses. In Poker, there is a difference between varying your approach and being inconsistent.

There are other Poker mistakes that, as a new player, you will make, but the important thing is to learn from it. Take down notes after the game. Where did you go wrong? Did you misread your opponent's hands? Did you give out a "tell"? Did you miscalculate the bet size?

By taking the time to analyze your Poker game, you will be able to cope and ultimately, you will be the better for it.
